Optabac 0.5% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
• Indicated for infections caused by specific bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, and Neisseria species

Pharmacology

• Contains chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
• Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by interfering with the transfer of activated amino acids from soluble RNA to ribosomes

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended dosage for adults and children
• Administration frequency of 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours, then every 4 hours thereafter
• Treatment duration of approximately 7 days, with a maximum duration of 3 weeks without re-evaluation by a physician

Interaction

• Potential inhibition of chymotrypsin if given simultaneously with the medicine

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or any ingredients of the preparation

Side Effects

• Common adverse reactions include burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, blood dyscrasia, allergic or inflammatory reactions, vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis
• Systemic adverse reactions not observed within short-term topical use

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safety for use in pregnancy and lactation not established
• Usage only when considered essential by physicians

Precautions & Warnings

• Not recommended for minor infections or prophylaxis
• Avoid repeated courses and prolonged treatments
• Risk of blood dyscrasias (granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia and moderate anaemia) after prolonged ophthalmic use

Overdose Effects

• Low risk of toxicity from accidental ingestion due to low antibiotic content

Storage Conditions

• Store in a cool, dry place between 2°C-8°C
• Protect from light
• Keep out of reach of children
• Avoid touching the dropper tip to surfaces to prevent contamination
• Discard after 30 days of first opening
