Indications

  • Treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
  • Infections caused by Optaphenicol-susceptible organisms
  • Treatment of infections caused by specific bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, etc.

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
  • Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
  • Interference with transfer of activated amino acids

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
  • Frequency: 4-6 times per day for first 72 hours, then every 4 hours thereafter
  • Duration: approximately 7 days, not more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation

Interaction

  • Inhibition of chymotrypsin if given simultaneously with Optaphenicol

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety not established for use during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid use for minor infections or prophylaxis
  • Avoid repeated course and prolonged treatment
  • Risk of blood dyscrasias after prolonged ophthalmic use

Overdose Effects

  • Unlikely to cause toxicity due to low antibiotic content
