Indications

  • Treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
  • Susceptible organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, Neisseria species

Pharmacology

  • Chloramphenicol as a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
  • Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
  • Interference with transfer of activated amino acids from soluble RNA to ribosomes

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult and Children dosage
  • Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
  • Frequency: 4-6 times per day for first 72 hours, then every 4 hours
  • Treatment duration: approximately 7 days
  • Avoid prolonged use without re-evaluation by physician

Interaction

  • Chymotrypsin inhibition when given simultaneously with Ocubac

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in individuals with history of hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients

  • Vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis

  • Use only when considered essential by the physician

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid use for minor infections or prophylaxis
  • Avoid repeated and prolonged treatment
  • Risk of blood dyscrasias after prolonged use

Overdose Effects

  • Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause toxicity due to low antibiotic content
