Indications

Treatment of ocular infections
Infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
Susceptible organisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp, Moraxella lacunata, Neisseria species

Pharmacology

Chloramphenicol as broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
Interference with transfer of activated amino acids

Dosage & Administration

Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
Frequency: 4-6 times per day for first 72 hours, then every 4 hours
Treatment duration: approximately 7 days
Maximum treatment duration: not more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation by physician

Interaction

Inhibition of chymotrypsin if given simultaneously with Ocuclor

Contraindications

Contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients

Side Effects

Systemic adverse reactions not observed with short-term topical use
Frequently reported adverse reactions: burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, blood dyscrasia, allergic or inflammatory reactions, vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

Safety not established for use in pregnancy and lactation
Use only when essential as per physician's discretion

Precautions & Warnings

Not for minor infections or prophylaxis
Avoid repeated courses and prolonged treatment
Risk of blood dyscrasias after prolonged ophthalmic use

Overdose Effects

Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause significant toxicity due to low antibiotic content
