Ocutrex 0.5% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Treatment of ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea caused by Ocutrex-susceptible organisms

Pharmacology

• Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic which inhibits bacterial protein synthesis

Dosage & Administration

• Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours and then every 4 hours thereafter
• Treatment duration of approximately 7 days
• Should not be continued for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation by the physician

Interaction

• Inhibits Chymotrypsin if given simultaneously

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients of the preparation

Side Effects

• Most frequently reported adverse reactions include burning, stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, blood dyscrasia, allergic or inflammatory reactions, vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safety for use in pregnancy and lactation not established
• Use only when considered essential by physicians

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid giving for minor infections or for prophylaxis
• Avoid repeated course and prolonged treatment
• Blood dyscrasias may occur after prolonged ophthalmic use

Overdose Effects

• Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause toxicity due to low antibiotic content

• Store between 2°C-8°C
• Protect from light
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not touch dropper tip to surface
• Do not use after 30 days of first opening
