Indications

  • Treatment of ocular infections
  • Infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea
  • Caused by Ramphen-susceptible organisms
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • E.coli
  • H. influenzae
  • Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp
  • Moraxella lacunata
  • Neisseria species

Pharmacology

  • Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic
  • Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
  • Interference with transfer of activated amino acids
  • Soluble RNA to ribosomes

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 1 or 2 drops in the conjunctival sac
  • 4-6 times per day for the first 72 hours
  • Then every 4 hours thereafter
  • Treatment for approximately 7 days
  • Not to be continued for more than 3 weeks without re-evaluation

Interaction

  • Inhibition of chymotrypsin if given simultaneously with Ramphen

Contraindications

  • History of hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any ingredients

  • Stinging
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Blood dyscrasia
  • Allergic or inflammatory reactions
  • Vesicular and maculopapular dermatitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety not established for use in pregnancy and lactation
  • Use only when considered essential by physicians

Precautions & Warnings

  • Never given for minor infections or prophylaxis
  • Avoid repeated course and prolonged treatment
  • Potential blood dyscrasias after prolonged ophthalmic use

Overdose Effects

  • Accidental ingestion unlikely to cause toxicity due to low antibiotic content
