Indications
- Treatment of traveler's diarrhea by noninvasive strains of E. coli
- Reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy
- Bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic, rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic
- Inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis
- Exerts bactericidal action against many species of Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- For travelers' diarrhea: 200 mg 3 times daily for 3 days (≥12 years of age)
- For hepatic encephalopathy: 550 mg 2 times daily (≥18 years of age)
- For bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome: 400 mg 3 times daily for 10 days or 550 mg 3 times daily for 14 days
Interaction
In vitro study suggested that Rifagut induces CYP3A4. Not expected to induce CYP3A4 in patients with normal liver function.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Rifaximin or rifamycin antimicrobial agents, or any components of this product

Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category C. Excretion in human milk unknown.
Precautions & Warnings
- Not effective in patients with diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in the stools
- Discontinue if diarrhea symptoms worsen or persist for more than 24-48 hours
- Consider alternative antibiotic therapy if needed
- Pseudomembranous colitis reported with antibacterial agents
- Consider diagnosis in patients presenting with diarrhea after antibiotic administration
Use in Special Populations
- No pharmacokinetics study in patients with impaired renal function
- Markedly elevated systemic exposure in patients with hepatic impairment compared to healthy subjects
Overdose Effects
No specific information available on the treatment of overdose with Rifagut. Discontinue, treat symptomatically, and provide supportive measures as required.
