Description
- Rifaxin is indicated for the treatment of traveler's diarrhea by noninvasive strains of E. coli, reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy, and bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome. It is a semisynthetic, rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic that inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by its action on the beta-subunit of the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

Dosage
- For Traveler's Diarrhea: 200 mg 3 times daily for 3 days (patients ≥12 years of age)
- For Hepatic Encephalopathy: 550 mg 2 times daily (patients ≥18 years of age)
- For Bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome: 400 mg 3 times daily for 10 days or 550 mg 3 times daily for 14 days
Interaction
- In vitro study suggests induction of CYP3A4 by Rifaxin
- Not expected to induce CYP3A4 in patients with normal liver function

- Hypersensitivity to Rifaximin or any rifamycin antimicrobial agents or any components of the product

Precautions warnings
- Not effective in patients with diarrhea complicated by fever and/or blood in the stools
- Discontinue if diarrhea symptoms worsen or persist for more than 24-48 hours
- Consider alternative antibiotic therapy if needed
- Risk of pseudomembranous colitis with antibacterial agents
- Consider diagnosis in patients with diarrhea after antibacterial administration
Use special populations
- Renal Impairment: Pharmacokinetics not studied
- Hepatic Impairment: Markedly elevated systemic exposure in patients with hepatic impairment
