Indications
- Treatment of traveler's diarrhea by noninvasive strains of E. coli
- Reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy
- Bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic, rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic
- Inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis
- Exerts bactericidal action against many species of bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- 200 mg 3 times daily for 3 days for traveler's diarrhea in patients ≥12 years of age
- 550 mg 2 times daily for hepatic encephalopathy in patients ≥18 years of age
- 400 mg 3 times daily for 10 days for bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome
- 550 mg 3 times daily for 14 days for bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome
Interaction
- In vitro study has suggested that Faxan induces CYP3A4
- Faxan at recommended dosing is not expected to induce CYP3A4 in patients with normal liver function
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rifaximin or rifamycin antimicrobial agents

Precautions & Warnings
- Not effective in patients with complicated diarrhea
- Discontinue therapy if symptoms worsen or persist for more than 24-48 hours
- Consider pseudomembranous colitis diagnosis in patients with diarrhea after antibiotic administration
Use in Special Populations
- Pharmacokinetics not studied in patients with impaired renal function
- Systemic exposure markedly elevated in hepatic impairment
