Description
Rifamax is a semisynthetic, rifamycin-based non-systemic antibiotic indicated for the treatment of traveler's diarrhea, reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy, and bacterial overgrowth of irritable bowel syndrome. It inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by its action on the beta-subunit of the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and shows broad spectrum activity against many species of bacteria. It is available in different dosages for different indications and can be taken with or without food. However, it is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Rifaximin or any rifamycin antimicrobial agents, and has various side effects and precautions.
