Indications

  • Short-term treatment of bacterial infections

Composition

  • 375 mg tablet: Amoxicillin 250mg, Clavulanic Acid 125mg
  • 625 mg tablet: Amoxicillin 500mg, Clavulanic Acid 125mg
  • 1 gm tablet: Amoxicillin 875mg, Clavulanic Acid 125mg
  • Powder for Suspension: Amoxicillin 125mg, Clavulanic Acid 31.25mg
  • Powder for Suspension (Forte): Amoxicillin 400mg, Clavulanic Acid 57.5mg
  • 1.2 gm Injection: Amoxicillin Sodium 1gm, Clavulanate Potassium 200mg
  • 0.6 gm Injection: Amoxicillin Sodium 500mg, Clavulanate Potassium 100mg

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum antibacterial combination
  • Amoxicillin with bactericidal activity
  • Clavulanic Acid as beta-lactamase inhibitor

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: 625 mg Tablet every 12 hours
  • Suspension dosage for children: 2 teaspoonful every 8 hours
  • IV Injection dosage for adults: 1.2 gm every 8 hours

Administration

  • Oral dosage form without regard to meals
  • IV injection administered over 2 minutes or slow intravenous infusion

Interaction

  • Prolongation of bleeding time and prothrombin time
  • Reduction of oral contraceptives' efficacy

Contraindications

  • History of Penicillin hypersensitivity
  • Cross-sensitivity with other beta-lactam antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Diarrhea
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Hepatitis
  • Urticarial and erythematous rashes

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No teratogenic effect in animal studies
  • Trace quantities of Amoxicillin in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with care in patients on anticoagulation therapy
  • Dosage adjustment for moderate or severe renal impairment

Use in Special Populations

  • Dose adjustment for patients with renal impairment
  • Hepatic function monitoring

Overdose Effects

  • Unlikely occurrence
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Disturbance of fluid and electrolyte balances
