        Pharmacology

        Precautions & Warnings

        • Serial tests of auditory function and Vancard blood levels for patients with borderline renal function and individuals over the age of 60
        • Haematological studies, urine analysis, and renal function tests for all patients receiving the drug
        • Irritation to tissue and injection site necrosis when injected intramuscularly
        • Injection site pain and thrombophlebitis
        • Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
        • Observation for superinfection
        • Reports of pseudomembranous colitis due to C. difficile

        Overdose Effects

        • Supportive care advised
        • Poor removal from the blood by haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
        • Limited benefit of haemoperfusion with Amberlite resin XAD-4
