Pharmacology

Precautions & Warnings
- Serial tests of auditory function and Vancard blood levels for patients with borderline renal function and individuals over the age of 60
- Haematological studies, urine analysis, and renal function tests for all patients receiving the drug
- Irritation to tissue and injection site necrosis when injected intramuscularly
- Injection site pain and thrombophlebitis
- Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
- Observation for superinfection
- Reports of pseudomembranous colitis due to C. difficile
Overdose Effects
- Supportive care advised
- Poor removal from the blood by haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Limited benefit of haemoperfusion with Amberlite resin XAD-4
