DosageAndAdministration
- Concentrations of no more than 5 mg/ml
- Rates of no more than 10 mg/min
- Usual daily dose for adults: 2 gm (in 4 or 2 divided doses)
- Total daily dose for children: 40 mg/Kg (in 4 divided doses)
- Initial dose for infants and neonates: 15 mg/Kg
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- Capsule dosage for adults with antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis: 125 to 500 mg administered orally every 6 to 8 hours for 7 to 10 days
- Capsule dosage for pediatrics: approximately 40 mg/kg in 3 or 4 divided doses for 7 to 10 days administered orally
Pharmacology
- Binding to D-alanyl-D-alanine portion cell wall precursor
- Blockage of glycopeptide polymerisation
- Immediate inhibition of cell wall synthesis
- Secondary damage to the cytoplasmic membrane
