Indications

  • Treatment of potentially life-threatening infections
  • Therapy for severe staphylococcal infections
  • Treatment of endocarditis
  • Prophylaxis against endocarditis
  • Treatment of infections due to staphylococci such as osteomyelitis, pneumonia, septicemia, and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Binds tightly to D-alanyl-D-alanine portion cell wall precursor
  • Causes blockage of glycopeptide polymerisation
  • Inhibits cell wall synthesis
  • Causes secondary damage to the cytoplasmic membrane

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended concentrations and rates for adults
  • Dosage for patients with normal renal function
  • Dosage for patients with impaired renal function and elderly patients
  • Recommended dosage adjustments based on creatinine clearance

Contraindications

  • Requirement for intravenous infusion
