Pharmacology
Broad spectrum bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria and some protozoa
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for mild to moderate infections
- Dosage for severe infections
- Dosage for long term therapy

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
- Megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
- Liver parenchymal damage
- Blood dyscrasia
- Severe renal insufficiency
- Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Pregnancy & Lactation
Sulphonamides pass the placenta and are excreted in the breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of macrocytic anaemia
- Interference in the conversion of Folic acid into Folinic acid
- Care when giving Alcot to diabetic patients receiving sulphonylurea drug
