Indications

Bactericidal activity against a wide range of organisms
Effective for respiratory tract infections
Suitable for genito-urinary tract infections
Treatment for gastro-intestinal tract infections
Indicated for various infections including osteomyelitis and skin infections

Pharmacology

Broad spectrum bactericidal activity against gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria and some protozoa, containing Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5 combination

Different dosage for mild to severe infections
Specific dosage for long term therapy
Dosage for gonorrhoea
Different dosage for tablets and suspension
Age-specific dosage

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
Contraindicated in patients with documented megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
Contraindicated in marked liver parenchymal damage, blood dyscrasia, severe renal insufficiency, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Side Effects

Rare side effects like crystalluria, haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis
Less serious side effects include malaise, headache, nausea, vomiting
Transient side effects that do not require withdrawal of treatment

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended during pregnancy and nursing period due to potential harm to the baby

Precautions & Warnings

Prolonged full dose treatment may lead to macrocytic anaemia
Diabetic patients receiving sulphonylurea drug should be cautious
