Indications

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum bactericidal activity
  • Acts against gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria
  • Acts against some protozoa
  • Contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole
  • Exerts bactericidal action by the sequential blockade of two bacterial enzyme systems

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for over 12 years old
  • Dosage for mild to moderate infections

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
  • Megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
  • Liver parenchymal damage
  • Blood dyscrasia
  • Severe renal insufficiency
  • Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Side Effects

  • Rare side effects like crystalluria, haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis
  • Less serious side effects like malaise, headache, nausea, vomiting
  • Transient side effects
  • Side effects do not require withdrawal of treatment

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Sulphonamides pass the placenta
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • May cause kernicterus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Risk of macrocytic anaemia
  • Drug's interference in the conversion of Folic acid into Folinic acid
  • Reversible by giving Folinic acid
  • Care with diabetic patients receiving sulphonylurea drug
