Description

  • Bactericidal in vitro to a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Exerts bactericidal action by sequential blockade of two bacterial enzyme systems
  • Used for respiratory tract infections, genito-urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, osteomyelitis, skin infections, and more
  • Contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5 combination
  • Associated with side effects such as crystalluria, allergic reactions, haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, malaise, headache, nausea, and vomiting
  • Contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides, documented megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency, marked liver parenchymal damage, blood dyscrasia, severe renal insufficiency, and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Associated with pregnancy and lactation risks due to the passage of sulphonamides through placenta and breast milk
  • Precautions include the risk of macrocytic anaemia with prolonged treatment and the need for caution in diabetic patients receiving sulphonylurea drug
