Indications

Treats respiratory tract infections like bronchitis and pneumonia
Used for genito-urinary tract infections like cystitis and prostatitis
Effective against gastrointestinal infections caused by Salmonella
Suitable for skin infections including abscesses and wound infections

Pharmacology

Broad spectrum bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
Contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5 combination
Blocks bacterial enzyme systems in biosynthesis of folinic acid

Dosage & Administration

Double strength tablet for over 12 years old
Different dosages for mild to severe infections
Specific dosages for gonorrhea and long-term therapy
Suspension for children under 12 years with age-appropriate dosing

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
Not for patients with megaloblastic anemia or severe liver/renal damage
Avoid in patients with glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

Side Effects

Rare side effects like crystalluria and haemolysis reported
Less serious side effects include malaise, headache, nausea
Side effects are transient and generally do not require treatment withdrawal

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended during pregnancy and nursing period
Sulphonamides can pass through placenta and breast milk
May cause kernicterus in newborns

Precautions & Warnings

Prolonged treatment may lead to macrocytic anemia
Interferes with Folic acid conversion to Folinic acid
Caution needed in diabetic patients taking sulphonylurea drugs
