Indications

  • Bactericidal to a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
  • Suitable for treatment of chronic bronchitis
  • Suitable for urinary tract infections
  • Effective against Haemophilus influenzae, E. coli, and Proteus spp.

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum bactericidal activity
  • Effective against gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria and some protozoa
  • Contains Trimethoprim and Sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5 combination

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dosage for mild to moderate infections
  • Higher dosage for severe infections
  • Different dosages for different age groups
  • Long term therapy dosage

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulphonamides
  • Megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
  • Severe liver parenchymal damage, blood dyscrasia, severe renal insufficiency

Side Effects

  • Crystalluria
  • Allergic reactions
  • Haemolysis
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Neutropenia
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Transient side effects like malaise, headache, nausea, and vomiting

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Sulphonamides can pass the placenta and may cause kernicterus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Risk of macrocytic anaemia
  • Interference in the conversion of Folic acid into Folinic acid
  • Reversible with Folinic acid administration
  • Careful use in diabetic patients receiving sulfonylurea drugs
