Indications

  • Treatment of corneal ulcers
  • Treatment of conjunctivitis
  • Treatment of blepharitis
  • Targeted against susceptible strains of bacteria

Composition

  • Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 3 mg per ml
  • Benzalkonium Chloride 0.06 mg per ml

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity
  • Inhibits DNA gyrase (topoisomerase) A subunits
  • Effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms

Dosage & Administration

  • Corneal Ulcers: 2 drops every 15 minutes for 6 hrs, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the rest of the first day, followed by specific dosages for subsequent days
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis/Blepharitis: Specific dosage for 7 days
  • Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness not established for children under 1 year

Interaction

  • Potential interactions with theophylline
  • Potential interactions with caffeine metabolism
  • Potential interactions with oral anticoagulant warfarin
  • Potential interactions with cyclosporin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or any other component
  • Hypersensitivity to other quinolones including Nalidixic acid

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms including fungi
  • Discontinue use if super-infection occurs
  • Discontinue at first appearance of skin rash or any sign of hypersensitivity reaction

Overdose Effects

  • Topical overdose may be flushed from eye(s) with warm tap water

Therapeutic Class

  • Do not use more than one month after first opening of the bottle
