Indications

  • Treatment of corneal ulcers
  • Treatment of conjunctivitis
  • Treatment of blepharitis

Composition

  • Active Substance: Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 3 mg per ml
  • Preservative: Benzalkonium Chloride 0.06 mg per ml

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal
  • Inhibits A subunits of DNA gyrase (topoisomerase)

Dosage & Administration

  • 2 drops every 15 minutes for first six hours for corneal ulcers
  • 2 drops every 30 minutes for remainder of first day for corneal ulcers
  • 1 drop every two hours for two days for bacterial conjunctivitis/blepharitis
  • 1 drop every four hours for the next five days for bacterial conjunctivitis/blepharitis
  • Safety and effectiveness in children under 1 year of age not established

Interaction

  • May elevate plasma concentrations of theophylline
  • May interfere with metabolism of caffeine
  • May enhance effects of oral anticoagulant warfarin
  • May cause transient elevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving cyclosporin concomitantly

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or any other component of the product
  • Hypersensitivity to other quinolones, including Nalidixic acid

Side Effects

  • Local burning or discomfort
  • White crystalline precipitates in approximately 17% of patients
  • Lid margin crusting
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Itching
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Bad taste following instillation

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Discontinue use and initiate alternative therapy if super-infection occurs
  • Discontinue at the first appearance of a skin rash or any sign of hypersensitivity reaction

Overdose Effects

  • Topical overdose may be flushed from the eye(s) with warm tap water

Therapeutic Class

  • Aural Anti-bacterial preparations
  • Ophthalmic antibacterial drugs

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature
  • Protect from light
  • Desirable to not use more than one month after first opening of bottle
