Indications

  • Treatment of corneal ulcers

Composition

  • Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Ciprofloxacin 3 mg per ml
  • Benzalkonium Chloride 0.06 mg per ml

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms
  • Inhibits DNA gyrase for bacterial DNA reproduction

Dosage & Administration

  • Instill 2 drops every 15 minutes for first six hours for corneal ulcers
  • Instill 1 drop every two hours for bacterial conjunctivitis/blepharitis
  • Pediatric use safety not established

Interaction

  • Potential interactions with theophylline
  • Potential interactions with caffeine metabolism
  • Potential interactions with oral anticoagulants
  • Transient elevations in serum creatinine with concomitant cyclosporin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or any other component
  • Hypersensitivity to other quinolones

Side Effects

  • Local burning or discomfort
  • White crystalline precipitates in approximately 17% of patients
  • Lid margin crusting
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Itching
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Bad taste following instillation

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Discontinue at first sign of skin rash or hypersensitivity reaction

Overdose Effects

  • Flushing from the eye(s) with warm tap water for topical overdose
