Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Effective against infections resistant to other antibiotics
- Treatment of a wide range of infections in urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
- Treatment of severe systemic infections like septicaemia and peritonitis
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections like bronchopneumonia and bronchitis
- Treatment of urinary tract infections like cystitis and prostatitis
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis and abscesses
- Treatment of gastrointestinal infections like enteric fever
- Treatment of infections in biliary tract and intra abdominal

- Indicated for gonorrhoea caused by beta-lactamase producing organisms

Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
- Bactericidal action results from interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Excreted in urine as unchanged drug and metabolites
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity of infection, causative organism, age, weight, and renal function
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage varies for different types of infections like urinary, respiratory, and gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment in patients with impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment needed for the elderly
- Duration of treatment depends on clinical response and bacteriological findings
Administration
- Instructions for IV infusion administration
- Check bag for leaks before administration
- Do not use if solution is cloudy or precipitate is present
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids
- Avoid concurrent administration with products containing calcium, iron, or zinc
- Avoid intake with milk or dairy products to prevent reduced absorption
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Common side effects: gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness
- Rare side effects: skin rash, joint pain, transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of retinal detachment, hypersensitivity reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Secreted in milk, not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- To be used with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent intake with magnesium/aluminum antacids or dairy products
- Drink fluids liberally while taking Ciprofloxacin
Use in Special Populations
- Not a first choice drug in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion
- Risk of renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria
