Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- May be taken with or without meals
- Drink fluids liberally
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium/aluminium antacids, or sucralfate or products containing calcium, iron, and zinc
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or yogurt alone
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, or products containing Calcium, Iron or Zinc
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or other dairy products
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of the causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function of the patient
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
Administration
- Instruction for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Guidelines for checking IV bag for leaks
- Do not use if cloudy or a precipitate is present
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Bactericidal action results from interference with enzyme DNA gyrase
Indications
- Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- For infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Antibacterial activity in serum, body tissues, and urine
- Wide range of infections including urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and gonorrhea
