Indications
- Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Treatment of urinary tract, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections
- Treatment of gonorrhoea
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action resulting from interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Approximate half-life of 3.5 hours
- Excretion of 30-50% of oral dose in urine within 24 hours
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function of patient
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for different types of infections
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- Duration of treatment based on severity and clinical response
- Specific dosages for cystic fibrosis and pediatric population
Administration
- Instructions for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
Interaction
- Concurrent administration to be avoided with certain antacids and other products
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or dairy products as absorption may be reduced
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
