Description
- A synthetic quinolone with broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
- Indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Pharmacology includes interference with the DNA gyrase enzyme for bacterial DNA synthesis
- Dosage recommendations based on infection type, patient age, weight, and renal function

Indications
- Treatment for single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Can be used for infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Efficacious for urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, soft tissue, and bone/joint infections
- Suitable for systemic, eye/ear/nose/throat, gonorrhea, and pelvic infections
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum activity against gram-negative aerobic bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Also active against some gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase enzyme for bacterial DNA synthesis
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily

Use in Special Populations
- Not a first-choice drug for pediatric population despite effectiveness in clinical trials
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, as well as crystalluria and haematuria
