Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections resistant to other antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins

- Peritonitis
- Immunosuppressed patients with haematological or solid tumors
- Intensive care unit patients with specific problems like infected burns

- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Gastro-intestinal infections
- Infection of the biliary tract
- Intra abdominal infections
- Bone and joint infections

- Eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria including penicillinase producing, non penicillinase producing, and methicillin-resistant staphylococci
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Dosage based on severity and type of infection, sensitivity of causative organism(s) and age, weight, and renal function
- Adult dosage range: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Lower and upper urinary tract infections dosage: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Respiratory tract infections dosage: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Gonorrhea dosage: Single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Majority of other infections dosage: 500-750 mg twice daily
- Duration of treatment based on severity of infection and clinical response
Administration
- Instruction for IV infusion of Ciprofloxacin
- Checking bag for leaks
- Not using if solution is cloudy or precipitate is present
- Regulating rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, or products containing Calcium, Iron, or Zinc
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Disturbances of the central nervous system
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia
- Mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy and lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Precautions and warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Drink fluids liberally while taking
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium/aluminium antacids, sucralfate, or products containing calcium, iron, and zinc
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or yogurt alone
Use in special populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

- Reversible renal toxicity
