Description
- Aprocin antibiotic tablets used for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by two or more susceptible organisms
- Infections resistant to other antibiotics
- Urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, soft tissue, bone, joint, pelvic, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
- Infections of the biliary tract, intra-abdominal infections, gonorrhea
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action due to interference with DNA gyrase enzyme
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for lower and upper urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, cystic fibrosis, impaired renal function, elderly
- Duration of treatment based on severity of infection and clinical response
- Instructions for extended-release tablets and IV infusion
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, calcium, iron, or zinc products
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system disturbances
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain, mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy and lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers as it is secreted in milk
Precautions and warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Instructions on administration with or without meals, and fluid intake
Use in special populations
- Not a first choice drug in pediatric population
