Description
Beuflox is indicated for the treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by two or more susceptible organisms. It can also be used for infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins and Cephalosporins. Ciprofloxacin, the active ingredient, has broad spectrum of activity and is effective against most gram-negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as well as gram-positive aerobic bacteria including penicillinase-producing, non-penicillinase-producing, and methicillin-resistant staphylococci.

Pharmacology
Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with broad spectrum of activity against various bacteria. Its bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for the synthesis of bacterial DNA. It is rapidly and well absorbed from the GI tract, widely distributed into the body tissues and fluids, and has a half-life of about 3.5 hours.
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for gonorrhea: Single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Duration of treatment: 5 to 10 days for acute infections
Administration
- Check for leaks before infusion
- Do not use if solution is cloudy or a precipitate is present
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
- Instructions for IV infusion administration
Interaction
Concurrent administration of Beuflox should be avoided with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids or sucralfate or with other products containing Calcium, Iron or Zinc. Beuflox should not be taken concurrently with milk or other dairy products as absorption may be significantly reduced.
Contraindications
Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential risk of arthropathy in immature animals. Administration to nursing mothers is also not recommended.
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium/aluminium antacids or sucralfate

Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
