Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Treatment of severe systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, eye, ear, nose and throat infections, and gonorrhea
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action from interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- 30-50% excreted in the urine within 24 hours as unchanged drug and metabolites
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, sensitivity of causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function of patient
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, and other infections
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function and elderly patients
- Caution and specific dosages for adolescents and children
Administration
- Instructions for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Precautions for checking the solution, using flexible bags, setting up the infusion, and regulating the rate of administration
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum-containing antacids, sucralfate, products containing calcium, iron, or zinc
- Avoid concurrent use with milk or dairy products to prevent reduced absorption
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Disturbances of the central nervous system
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain, mild photosensitivity, transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity, impairment of fertility, or impairment of peri/postnatal development in reproduction studies in mice, rats, and rabbits
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Recommendation to drink fluids liberally
- Precautions for concurrent administration with certain antacids and other products
- Caution against concurrent use with milk or yogurt alone
Use in Special Populations
- Effective in clinical trials but not a first choice drug in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
