Indications
- Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections resistant to other antibiotics
- Treatment of a wide range of infections including urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts, gonorrhea, septicaemia, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, bone and joint infections, and pelvic infections.
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity including gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action resulting from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excretion of 30-50% in urine within 24 hours as unchanged drug and biologically active metabolites.
Dosage
- General dosage recommendations based on severity, type of infection, sensitivity of causative organism(s), age, weight, and renal function of the patient
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion, including checking for leaks, suspension of the bag, and regulation of the administration rate.
Interaction
- Potential interactions to avoid with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, products containing calcium, iron, or zinc, and milk or other dairy products.
