Description

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis.
  • Rapid and well absorption from the GI tract.
  • Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids with a half-life of about 3.5 hours.
  • Excretion of about 30% to 50% in the urine within 24 hours.

Dosage

  • Adults:
    • 100-750 mg twice daily for various infections
  • Renal function:
    • Dosage adjustment may be required for patients with impaired renal function.
    • Monitor drug serum levels for reliable basis for dose adjustment.

Interaction

  • Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, products containing calcium, iron, or zinc.
  • Do not take concurrently with milk or dairy products as absorption may be reduced.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
