Description
- Broad spectrum antibiotic

Dosage
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
- Different dosages for different types of infections such as urinary, respiratory, and gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment in patients with impaired renal function, elderly, and children
- Dosage determined by severity of infection, sensitivity of causative organism, age, weight, and renal function of patient
- Duration of treatment depends upon severity of infection, clinical response, and bacteriological findings
Indications
- Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Effective against infections resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Suitable for infections of urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal tracts, gonorrhea, and septicaemia
- Indicated for treating severe systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infection, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infection, pelvic infections, and eye, ear, nose and throat infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with broad spectrum of activity
- Active against most gram negative and gram positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
Administration
- Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Specific guidelines for IV administration process
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with specific antacids or dairy products should be avoided
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, photosensitivity, increase in liver enzymes, urea, or creatinine levels, risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy
- Not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with CNS disorders or factors predisposing to seizures and convulsions
- Specific instructions for concurrent administration and absorption of Cipro-C
Use in Special Populations
- Effective but not first choice in pediatric population
