Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative aerobic bacteria
- Active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the GI tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Approximately 30% to 50% excretion in urine
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity and type of infection
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Lower and upper urinary tract infection dosage: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Gonorrhea treatment dosage: single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Cystic fibrosis dosage: 750 mg twice daily
- Dosage adjustment in impaired renal function
- Elderly dosage adjustment not necessary
- Adolescents and children dosage: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day
- Usual treatment period for acute infections: 5 to 10 days
Administration
- Instruction for IV infusion use
- Regulation of rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids or sucralfate
- Avoid concurrent administration with products containing Calcium, Iron or Zinc
- Avoid concurrent administration with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Take with or without meals
- Drink fluids liberally
