Indications

  • Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
  • Treatment of urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, gonorrhea, and septicaemia infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of gastrointestinal, biliary tract, intra-abdominal infections
  • Treatment of bone and joint infections
  • Treatment of pelvic infections
  • Treatment of eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
  • Treatment of gonorrhea
  • Treatment of systemic, respiratory, urinary, and other infections caused by sensitive bacteria

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Broad spectrum of activity
  • Active against most gram-negative aerobic bacteria
  • Bactericidal action from interference with DNA gyrase
  • Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
  • Excreted in the urine as unchanged drug and metabolites

Dosage

  • Determined by severity, type of infection, and patient characteristics
  • Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
  • Specific dosages for lower and upper urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, and other infections
  • Dosage adjustments for impaired renal function
  • No dosage adjustment for the elderly
  • Not recommended for use in children and growing adolescents
  • Duration of treatment based on severity of infection and clinical response

Administration

  • Instructions for IV infusion preparation and administration
  • Checking bag for leaks and integrity
  • Regulation of the rate of administration with flow control clamp

Interaction

  • Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids
  • Avoid concurrent use with products containing calcium, iron, or zinc
  • Avoid concurrently with milk or dairy products
  • Dietary calcium may not significantly affect absorption

Contraindications

  • History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

  • Joint pain
  • Mild photosensitivity
  • Transient increase in liver enzymes
  • Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential risk of arthropathy
  • Not recommended for nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with known or suspected CNS disorders
  • Option to take with or without meals and to drink fluids liberally

Use in Special Populations

  • Effective in clinical trials but not first choice in pediatric population

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, and renal and hepatic impairment
