Description
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of antibacterial activity

Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Indicated for a wide range of infections caused by susceptible organisms including urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections, gonorrhea, and septicaemia
- Indicated for severe systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections, and gonorrhea
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action resulting from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
- Active against most gram negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Also active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria including penicillinase producing, non penicillinase producing, and methicillin resistant staphylococci
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into the body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Different dosages for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment in impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment in the elderly
- Dosage for adolescents and children: 7.5-15 mg/kg/day divided into two doses
- Duration of treatment: 5 to 10 days for acute infections
Administration
- Instructions for IV infusion administration
Interaction
- Concurrent administration should be avoided with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, or products containing Calcium, Iron, or Zinc
- Ciprocin should not be taken concurrently with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders such as arteriosclerosis or epilepsy
- Fluid intake and food timing recommendations
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
