General Dosage Recommendations
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage in lower and upper urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage in respiratory tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for Streptococcus pneumonia infection: 750 mg twice daily
- Dosage in gonorrhea: A single dose of 250 or 500 mg
- Dosage for cystic fibrosis in adults: 750 mg twice daily
Pharmacology
- Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Active against most gram-negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Also active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria including penicillinase producing, non-penicillinase producing, and methicillin-resistant staphylococci
Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Effective for infections of the urinary, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, including gonorrhea and septicaemia
Mode of Action
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum-containing antacids, or sucralfate, or other products containing calcium, iron or zinc
- Should not be taken concurrently with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Central nervous system disturbances like headache, dizziness, and tiredness
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, pruritus, and possible systemic reactions
- Other reported reactions include joint pain, photosensitivity, and transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Fluid intake is recommended
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in the pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
- May result in crystalluria, haematuria, and reversible renal toxicity

- Keep below 30°C, protected from light and moisture
