Indications
- Treatment of single and mixed infections

Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from GI tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excreted in urine as unchanged drug and metabolites
Dosage
- Determined by severity, type of infection, and patient characteristics
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for urinary tract, respiratory tract, and gonorrhea

Administration

Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and products containing Calcium, Iron, or Zinc

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity, fertility impairment, or peri/post natal development impairment in animal studies
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy
- Secreted in milk, not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with CNS disorders or factors predisposing to seizures
- Liberally drink fluids during use
- Caution with concurrent administration of certain products
Use in Special Populations
- Not a first-choice drug in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, abdominal discomfort, and renal and hepatic impairment
- Reversible renal toxicity
