Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Effective against infections resistant to other antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Treatment of urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, soft tissue, biliary tract, intra-abdominal, bone and joint, pelvic, eye, ear, nose, throat, and gonorrhoea infections
- Suitable for immunosuppressed patients
- Used for infections of haematological or solid tumor patients
- Indicated for severe systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, eye, ear, nose and throat infections, and gonorrhoea
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against most gram-negative aerobic bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria including penicillinase producing, non-penicillinase producing, and methicillin-resistant staphylococci
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life is about 3.5 hours
- Excreted in the urine
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for different types of infections e.g. urinary tract, respiratory tract, gonorrhea, cystic fibrosis
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
