Dosage

Mode of Action

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
  • Bactericidal action from interference with DNA gyrase enzyme

Administration

  • Instructions for the intravenous infusion of Ciprox
  • Regulation of the rate of administration with flow control clamp

Interaction

  • Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids
  • Avoid concurrent administration with milk or other dairy products
  • 2-hour interval for intake of magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, or zinc-containing products after Ciprox administration

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

  • Transient increase in liver enzymes

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy
  • Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers due to secretion in milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
  • Encouragement to drink fluids liberally
  • Avoid concurrent administration with specific antacids or products containing calcium, iron, or zinc

Use in Special Populations

  • Effective in clinical trials but not a first-choice drug in pediatric population

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
  • May lead to crystalluria and reversible renal toxicity
