Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections resistant to other antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Infections of urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
- Gonorrhea, septicaemia, skin and soft tissue infections, gastro-intestinal infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action via interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- 30%-50% excretion in the urine within 24 hours
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for infections of urinary tract, respiratory tract, gonorrhea, and other infections
- Special dosage considerations for cystic fibrosis, impaired renal function, elderly, adolescents, and children
- Duration of treatment based on infection severity
Administration
- Instructions for intravenous infusion
- Guidelines for checking solution integrity and regulating flow control
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids or products containing Calcium, Iron, Zinc, or dairy products which may impact absorption
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Instructions on intake with or without meals, fluid consumption, and avoidance of specific concurrent medications
Use in Special Populations
- Not a first-choice drug in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
