Description
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with broad spectrum of activity
Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Treatment of severe systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections, and gonorrhea
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
- Oral administration rapidly absorbed, widely distributed into body tissues and fluids, half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excretion of 30-50% in urine within 24 hours
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Different dosages for specific infections e.g. urinary tract, respiratory tract, gonorrhea
- Special dosage considerations for cystic fibrosis, impaired renal function, elderly, adolescents, and children
- Duration of treatment and extended-release tablet recommendations
- Different dosages for IV infusion based on infection type and severity

Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products to maintain absorption effectiveness
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, photosensitivity, transient increase in liver enzymes, risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy in immature animals
- Secreted in milk, not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products to maintain absorption effectiveness
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, haematuria, and reversible renal toxicity
