Indications

Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Bactericidal action resulting from interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excretion in urine as unchanged drug and metabolites
Dosage
- Determined by severity and type of infection
- Dependent on the sensitivity of causative organism(s)
- General dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment necessary for the elderly
Administration
- Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Regulating rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Concurrent administration should be avoided with certain antacids and products containing certain minerals
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia
- Mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Drink fluids liberally
- Avoid concurrent intake with certain antacids and products containing certain minerals
- Avoid concurrent intake with milk or yogurt alone
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

- Seizures
- Hallucinations
- Abdominal discomfort
- Renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria
- Haematuria
- Reversible renal toxicity
