Description
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections resistant to other antibiotics including Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Infections of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
- Gonorrhea, septicaemia, infected burns, enteric fever, and others
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative aerobic bacteria
- Active against penicillinase producing, methicillin resistant staphylococci
- Bactericidal action results from interference with DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Adult dosage range: 100-750 mg twice daily based on severity and type of infection
- Specific dosages for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, cystic fibrosis, and others
- Different dosage for impaired renal function, elderly, adolescents and children
Administration
- Instructions for IV infusion and flow control
- Precautions for checking bag and handling administration set
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, or dairy products
- Wait two hours after or six hours before taking other products containing calcium, iron, or zinc
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain, mild photosensitivity, transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia, mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders such as arteriosclerosis or epilepsy
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids or dairy products
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, & reversible renal toxicity
