Indications

Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram-negative aerobic bacteria
- Active against gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action by interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excretion in the urine
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
- Different dosage for urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections
- Single dose for gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment for elderly
- Duration of treatment depends on severity of infection
Administration
- Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Check for leaks in the IV bag
- Proper fluid level in drip chamber
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids or sucralfate
- Avoid concurrent administration with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin

- Transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy

- Avoid concurrent administration with milk or yogurt alone

- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
