Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
- Treatment of urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections
- Treatment of gonorrhea, septicaemia, skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of biliary tract, intra abdominal, bone and joint infections
- Treatment of pelvic infections, eye, ear, nose and throat infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram negative and positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase enzyme
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- About 30% to 50% excreted in the urine within 24 hours
Dosage
- Dosage determined by severity, type of infection, sensitivity of causative organism, patient's age, weight, and renal function
- Adult dosage range: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for lower and upper urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, cystic fibrosis
- Dosage adjustment in impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment required for the elderly
- Not recommended for children and growing adolescents
Administration
- Instruction for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Proper checking and setup of administration set
- Regulation of administration rate with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids
- Avoid concurrent administration with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances
- Hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes, risk of retinal detachment
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for administration to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium/aluminium antacids or sucralfate
- Do not take concurrently with milk or yogurt alone
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion
- May lead to abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment
- May lead to reversible renal toxicity
