Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms

Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Active against gram negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action
- Interference with DNA gyrase
- Rapid and well absorption from the G.I. tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Excretion in urine as unchanged drug and metabolites
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for lower and upper urinary tract infections: 250-500 mg twice daily
- Dosage for respiratory tract infections: 250-750 mg twice daily
- Dosage for gonorrhea: 250-500 mg single dose
- Dosage for cystic fibrosis: 750 mg twice daily
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- No dosage adjustment for elderly
- Dosage not recommended for children
- Duration of treatment based on severity of infection
- Different dosage for extended-release tablet and IV infusion
Administration
- Instruction for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Squeezing the inner bag for leaks
- Avoiding use of flexible bags in series connections
- Regulating rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent use with Magnesium or Aluminum containing antacids or sucralfate
- Avoid concurrent use with products containing Calcium, Iron or Zinc
- Avoid concurrent use with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

- Mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia & mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Teratogenicity in immature animals
- Avoid use during pregnancy
- Secretion in milk, not recommended for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Liberally drinking fluids
- Avoiding concurrent use with certain antacids and dairy products
Use in Special Populations
- Effective in clinical trials, but not first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion
- Abdominal discomfort
- Renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria
- Reversible renal toxicity
