Indications
- Treatment of single and mixed infections
- Infections caused by susceptible and resistant organisms
- Urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections
- Gonorrhea treatment
- Severe systemic, respiratory, urinary, skin, soft tissue, gastrointestinal, biliary tract, intra-abdominal, bone, joint, pelvic, eye, ear, nose, and throat infections
Pharmacology
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
- Bactericidal action through interference with bacterial DNA synthesis
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
- Excretion in the urine
Dosage
- Adult dosage range: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosages for urinary tract, respiratory tract, gonorrhea, cystic fibrosis, renal function, elderly, adolescents, children
- Duration of treatment: 5-10 days for acute infections
- Extended-release tablet and IV infusion dosages
Administration
- Instructions for Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids, sucralfate, calcium, iron, or zinc products
- Do not take concurrently with milk or dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system disturbances
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain, photosensitivity, liver enzyme increase, hypoglycemia, mental health adverse effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy and nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
