Description
- Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent with broad spectrum of activity
Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and systemic tract infections
- Used alone or in combination for a wide range of infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of infections caused by organisms resistant to other antibiotics
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action results from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily depending on severity of infection
- Different dosages for specific infections such as urinary, respiratory, and gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
Administration
- Instructions for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Regulation of rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids or sucralfate
- Avoid concurrent use with milk or other dairy products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system disturbances
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain and mild photosensitivity
- Transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders such as arteriosclerosis or epilepsy
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products
Use in Special Populations
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, renal and hepatic impairment
- May cause crystalluria and haematuria
